MANY prisoners reportedly escaped on Monday morning in Benin City, Edo State, as hoodlums attacked the correctional centre along Sapele Road.
Our correspondent gathered that there was heavy gunshot in the prison, popularly called White House, when prison officials confronted the hoodlums.
In the process, it was learnt that many prisoners were set free, when the hoodlums reportedly overpowered the prison officials, and broke the walls to free the inmates.
Our correspondent observed that many businesses, shops, including banks around the area were shut in panic, owing to the news that prisoners had escaped.
It was gathered that by the time the security agents could intervene considerably, many properties had been destroyed, especially in areas around the prison.
There were also sporadic gunshots by hoodlums around St. Saviours Anglican Church Road, Ikpoba/Okha Local Government Area of the state, which made residents run helter-skelter, while some motorists abandoned their vehicles.
