#EndSARS: Protests continue in Abuja, as FG deploys soldiers

… Abuja Airport Road blocked

BARELY 48 hours after the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said the Federal Government would no longer fold its arms and watch the ongoing #EndSARS protests degenerate into chaos, heavily armed soldiers have been stationed in strategic locations in the Federal Capital Territory

The Military had also said it would begin an “Operation Crocodile Smile” but noted, in a separate statement, that this was not targeted at the protesters.

The soldiers were seen around protest areas on Monday.

They were mainly controlling traffic, and not molesting protesters, it was observed.

The Kubwa express, Central Bank of Nigeria headquarters, and AYA roundabout, among others, were manned.

Meanwhile, the Airport Road was also blocked by the protesters, a situation that caused serious gridlock and prevented many people from catching their flights.

An Uber driver, who simply identified himself as Victor, said he was not able to ply the road, and that a previous order he got was cancelled.

“But there is free flow of traffic in the Central and Wuse areas. I’ve been there today. I am currently in town, working,” he told our correspondent.

The #EndSARS protests have continued for more than one week, despite attempts by the Federal Government to calm protesters down.

The Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, which the youths rose up against, was scrapped and the prostesters’ five-point demand was also met.

But more demands, bearing on good governance, have been made, in addition to suspicion that the newly created Special Weapons and Tactics team created to replace SARS was a matter of dressing the defunct SARS in fresh robes.
