The Northern Women in politics on Monday 2nd September 2019 paid a courtesy visit to the ADC National Headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, the Chairperson of the group Hajia Sadetu
Abdullahi said that they came to speak with one voice towards the unity,
development and emancipation of northern women in particular and
Nigerian Women in general.
“Sir, we are here having in mind that, African Democratic Congress,
is one of the fastest growing political party in Nigeria today, to
among other things be educated about the party’s policy on the inclusion
of women in the party’s decision making organ such as the party’s
working committees and not just a woman leader position. What policy do
you have that provides the opportunity for women to contest election to
any offices of their choice from ward Councillorship to the office of
the President of the Country? She said
In his reaction, the National
Chairman of ADC, Chief Ralphs Okey Nwosu said that ADC is the most
gender friendly political party in Nigeria. “ADC got transformed last
year, and the first primary election of the party was the FCT Senatorial
primary that produced a woman candidate, Amb Esther Audu as the
candidate of the party” he said.
“In our amended constitution, we
said that 30% of all elective and appointed positions should go to women
and youths respectively while 40% percent goes to others. Even in the
remaining 40% percent the women are also free to share in it,” he said.
The chairman also noted that ADC women did their best and also won
elections at their various constituencies but was shortchanged by the
system, but promised that ADC would still have a female Senator once the
election tribunals concludes all the pending cases.
The chairman
reiterated that our handshake represents our philosophy, ideology and
diversity values. As a nation there is more for us to harness using our
diversity and numerical strength. The National Chairman enjoined the
women to remain focus, and come 2023 that ADC will provide more women in
government.
Also present in the meeting were Alhaji Said Baba
Abdullahi, Chief Kelvin Alagoa, Chief Anayo Arinze, Amb Esther Audu,
Barr Justina Abanida and many others were all present during the
meeting.
