ADC – Women Clamor For More Representation In Governance

25 August 2021 By Georgina Humphrey

Despite making up more than half of the population in many countries women and youths are often marginalized from mainstream politics and decision making.

They struggle to gain the respect of public officials and are seen as lacking the skills and experience to engage in political activity and positively change their communities.

This exclusion, combined with limited educational and economic opportunities, can leave women and young people idle and frustrated with the status quo.

Today’s women and youths therefore need real opportunities to participate in political processes and contribute to practical solutions to advance development.

These are the reasons why women from the African Democratic Congress, ADC, from the North Central Zone converged on Abuja to proffer solutions.

National Women Leader of the ADC, Kyauta Yakubu said though Nigeria has adopted a national gender policy, women and youth participation in politics remains low based on the believe that activities of women ends in the kitchen.

The women leader who blamed political parties for stalling efforts being made to include more women in politics and governance stressed that ADC has provided a platform for the 35% affirmative action for women participation in politics.

She explained that if the long awaited desire for a new Nigeria must be realized, women participation was vital and urged women to arise and contribute to the creation of a new and better Nigeria.

On his part, the National Chairman of the ADC, Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu stressed that Indeed, political parties in Nigeria have provisions in their constitutions, guidelines, and rules to ensure the inclusion of women in the scheme of things, but in practice, these provisions are either disregarded or utterly breached.

Chief Nwosu stressed that the aim of the programme was to sensitise and mobilise political party leaders and other stakeholders to proffer effective strategies that would improve the participation of women in the political process especially as the 2023 elections draws near.

Chief Nwosu used the occasion to urge the government to find solutions to the insurgency ravaging the country.

The Communication Director of ADC, Miss Ife’nla Oligbinde who said power is not given but taken stressed that the time has come for both women and youths to rise and assume leadership positions

She said the ADC have given 35% participation to women and was ready to work effectively with any woman that is interested.

In an interview the FCT Women Leader of the party Jasinta Onyekwere said when women and youths participate in decision making surely there would be good governance and development in the country.
