Suspended Anambra traditional ruler, Igwe Nzekwe, dies 7 days after pardon

BY NGOZI OKORIE

IGWE Nkeli Nzekwe, traditional ruler of Igbariam, Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State, is dead.

The traditional ruler was one of the 13 monarchs pardoned by Governor Willie Obiano on January 1, 2021, after four months of suspension.

The 13 traditional rulers were suspended in August 2020 for travelling to Abuja to visit President Muhammadu Buhari without permission from the state government.

Igwe Nzekwe was the Chairman of the Traditional Rulers Council, Anambra North Senatorial District.

The Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C-Don Adinuba, who confirmed Nzekwe’s death, disclosed that he had been buried.

The monarch’s death has however thrown Igbariam community into mourning as he was said to have, on January 4, celebrated the Ofala festival to mark his 30th anniversary on the throne.
