Five commercial drivers feared killed in clash with soldiers in Kwara

BY UMMU ABUBAKAR

THERE was commotion in Ilesha-Baruba, Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State on Friday when the alleged refusal of a commercial driver to pay N100 bribe reportedly caused a bloody clash between the drivers and soldiers in the area.

About five commercial drivers reportedly lost their lives in the clash while many others were injured.

The incident occurred around a roadblock mounted on the road leading to Ilesha Baruba, where a commercial driver had allegedly refused to give the soldiers N100.

The driver had complained that he had paid the N100 six times on his way to and from Sinawu (being a market day), insisting that he would no longer pay the allleged bribe.

Angered by his confrontation, the soldiers allegedly slapped the driver many times, after which he abandoned his car and left to mobilise his colleagues.

It was gathered that about five of the commercial drivers were killed in the mayhem that followed, as the soldiers reportedly opened fire as they mobilised to the roadblock area.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the incident, saying that the Police had commenced full investigations.

According to him, the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Bagega, has directed that those injured in the clash be taken to hospital for medical treatment.

He called for peace and calm in the area.
