THE Federal Government, on Thursday, berated the CNN for allegedly relying on social media videos for its report on the alleged shooting of #EndSARS protesters at Lekki tollgate, in Lagos, Nigeria, without verifying them.
The Government said such report “should earn the CNN a serious sanction for irresponsible reporting.”
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, insisted that contrary to the foreign news platform’s report, not a single family had come out to claim that their family member was killed in what he described as a “massacre without bodies.”
Mohammed, who made the Federal Government’s position on the matter public at a press conference in Abuja, said the CNN report reflected irresponsible journalism.
According to him, FG stands by the testimony of the Commander of 81 Military Intelligence Brigade, Victoria Island, Lagos, Brig. Gen. Ahmed Taiwo, that blank bullets were fired at the tollgate.
Taiwo had testified before the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on the alleged shooting last Saturday.
Mohammed however urged those who might have evidence to the contrary to prove their case during the panel sittings, while accusing those he called unscrupulous persons of circulating fake news on the social media.
